A taxonomy of “prick,” “dick,” “shit,” and “jerk”
Jim Maloy from Barrie, Ontario, was wondering about various types that do not quite “make the cut” as assholes, and sent me these great suggestions about how to distinguish the prick, dick, shit, and jerk. The suggestions seem promising at first blush. (So to speak, if you’re blushing. Who am I kidding? I’ve long stopped blushing about these things!)
The proposed taxonomy:
Asshole is the worst (see Assholes: A Theory by Aaron James)
“Prick” implies arrogance and heartlessness, but does admit the possibility of competence. A prick is overly focused on achieving an end, not on himself, distinguishing himself from an asshole.
“Dick” is like prick but without the saving grace of competence.
A “shit” is conspicuously self-serving.
A “jerk” alienates others in unnecessary ways.
I’d elaborate in various ways, but these seems like a very good start on the key differences.
